Around 15% of the Canine and Feline Population have underlying Heart Disease.
Degenerative Mitral Valve Disease (MVD) accounts for 75% of heart disease in dogs and is the most common cause of Congestive Heart Failure in this species.
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopthy (HCM), also known the "silent killer", has an estimated prevalence of 15% in cats and accounts for more than 50% of Feline Cardiomyopathies.
In most instances, veterinarians can detect a heart murmur during a routine physical exam, prompting further investigation into the matter and early intervention.
However,
early stages of heart disease may go undetected in some pets because not all pets with heart disease will present with a heart murmur (especially cats) and many may not show clinical signs until they have developed Congestive Heart Failure.
Meet Buster, a 6-year-old Jack Russel Terrier who presented to his primary care veterinarian for coughing and exercise intolerance. It was discovered he had a heart murmur. He was previously healthy and would come in once every 3 years for his rabies vaccination.
